The short version
Ifemelu prepares to leave America for Nigeria and remembers the school romance she shared with Obinze. University strikes prompted her move abroad; financial desperation and a humiliating sexual encounter later led her to cut off contact with him. In America she studies, forms new relationships, and builds a successful blog about race. Obinze's own attempt to live in Britain ends in deportation. Back in Nigeria he becomes wealthy and marries. Ifemelu's return brings them together again, but his marriage prevents them from simply resuming their earlier relationship.
