The short version
Wounded Confederate soldier Inman leaves a military hospital and walks toward Cold Mountain, hoping to find Ada. Deserter patrols and violent encounters repeatedly threaten the journey. At Black Cove, Ada struggles to run the farm after her father's death until Ruby arrives and teaches her practical work. Their friendship develops a household Inman has not yet seen. When Ruby's father Stobrod is shot by the Home Guard, the women leave to help him. Inman reaches the farm during their absence and follows them into the mountains.
