The short version

Klara, a solar-powered Artificial Friend, studies people from a shop window before Josie chooses her as a companion. Josie is seriously ill after the procedure called lifting, which is intended to improve children's prospects. Her unlifted friend Rick faces a different future. Klara discovers that Josie's mother and Mr. Capaldi are preparing an artificial replacement in case Josie dies, and they want Klara to reproduce her personality.
