Story in 60 Seconds
The short version
Joe Kavalier escapes Prague and joins his cousin Sammy Clay in New York. Joe draws and Sammy writes the Escapist, a comic-book hero whose attacks on Nazis reflect Joe's fear for his family in Europe. Their success does not give them control of their publisher's rights or protect their private lives. Joe falls in love with Rosa Saks, while Sammy conceals his sexuality. When Joe's brother dies on a refugee ship, Joe enlists and disappears from Rosa's life. Sammy and Rosa marry and raise Joe's son.
