The short version
Shevek, a physicist from the anarchist moon Anarres, travels to the wealthy planet Urras to pursue work obstructed at home. Alternating chapters show his upbringing, partnership with Takver and struggles with an institution that claims to reject hierarchy. On Urras, the university welcomes him, but its hospitality depends on gaining control of his scientific breakthrough. His contact with workers outside that privileged setting exposes the violence supporting it. Shevek seeks a way to share his theory beyond either society's control, then returns toward Anarres without knowing how he will be received.
