Story in 60 Seconds
The short version
Essun discovers that her husband has killed their son after learning he was an orogene and has fled with their daughter, Nassun. As a catastrophic Fifth Season begins, she leaves home to find them. Other chapters follow Damaya, a child taken to the Fulcrum for training, and Syenite, an adult orogene assigned to work and reproduce with Alabaster. Their experiences expose the violence behind the institution's control of orogenic power. The three lives eventually prove to be one woman's history, while Essun's journey brings her back to Alabaster.

At Castrima, Essun finds Alabaster and learns that he caused the continental rupture. The revelation that Damaya, Syenite and Essun are the same person connects the search for Nassun to earlier losses and attempts to escape the Fulcrum. Alabaster's question about the moon opens a larger problem; this volume does not complete Essun's search or resolve the catastrophe.
