Why read this guide

This film keeps changing the meaning of its clues as Hae-joon and Seo-rae move closer. The guide distinguishes the two investigations and explains why the beach ending completes their relationship.

PlotGeeks note

The mystery matters because detection is also the pair's private language. Hae-joon wants proof, but attention itself becomes the intimacy neither can state plainly.

Story in 60 Seconds

The short version

Busan detective Jang Hae-joon investigates the death of a retired immigration worker who fell from a mountain. The victim's Chinese widow, Song Seo-rae, does not display conventional grief, and Hae-joon begins watching her closely. Surveillance turns into fascination as they share meals and conversations. Evidence eventually shows that Seo-rae caused her abusive husband's death, but Hae-joon lets her go and tells her to destroy a phone. More than a year later, both have moved to Ipo. Seo-rae's new husband dies, drawing Hae-joon into another case and forcing their unresolved attachment back into view.

Seo-rae did not kill her second husband, but she arranged events so Hae-joon would investigate and understand why she had kept the phone. After he again chooses duty over reunion, she digs a pit on the tidal beach, climbs inside, and lets the sea cover her. Hae-joon arrives too late and searches without realizing where she is. Seo-rae becomes the unsolved case that will hold his attention permanently, turning disappearance into the final expression of the love he could only sustain through investigation.
