Story in 60 Seconds
The short version
Wrongly convicted of stealing shoes, Stanley Yelnats is sent to Camp Green Lake, where boys dig holes under the Warden's harsh supervision. The work supposedly builds character, but valuable finds reveal a concealed search for treasure. Flashbacks connect the dry lake to the killing of Sam and Kate Barlow's later life as an outlaw. Stanley befriends Zero and goes after him when he flees into the desert. Carrying his friend to water unknowingly answers an old family promise, before they return to find the chest the Warden has been seeking.
