Story in 60 Seconds
The short version
After the First World War, veteran Tom Sherbourne becomes lighthouse keeper on remote Janus Rock and marries Isabel Graysmark. Two miscarriages leave them devastated. A boat washes ashore carrying a dead man and a living infant, and Isabel persuades Tom not to report the discovery. They raise the child as Lucy. On the mainland, Tom learns that Hannah Roennfeldt lost her husband and baby at sea and realizes Lucy is her daughter Grace. His guilt leads to anonymous contact and eventually exposes the truth, bringing arrest, separation, and a painful attempt to return Grace to the mother she no longer knows.
